Spring Fundraiser Update: Raffle Tickets

KIP’s annual spring fundraiser is coming up next month. We’ll launch the event soon by sending home KIP raffle tickets. This year, we have three prizes for the lucky winners:

Grand Prize: An iPad 2
Second Prize: A Kindle Fire
Third Prize: $100

This year’s raffle tickets will sell for $10 each, and we’ll be asking each family to sell 10 tickets. Monies raised in this year’s fundraiser are being designated for supplemental teacher training and a new fence for our playground.

Winter Weather Closing Policy

It’s that time of year again when snow, ice, and freezing rain can wreak havoc with the school schedule. Announcements regarding school cancellations and delayed starts will be made on WAVE and WHAS radio and television. As a general policy, the school will follow the same decision regarding closings as Jefferson County Public Schools.

When JCPS is delayed, we will open at 8:15 a.m. When JCPS is closed, KIP is closed.

A decision regarding school closings is usually made the night before, but sometimes as late as 5:00 a.m. If you are unsure, call the KI phone line, where we will have a recording as soon as any decision is made. This website will be updated as often as possible, but an early morning decision may not be posted until 7:00 a.m. the next day.

Cold Weather Clothing Reminder

Welcome back to KIP, and Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great holiday. Now that winter is fully underway, we want to remind you of KIP’s cold-weather clothing guidelines.

We get our kids outside whenever possible. Many classes will go outside every day the temperature is above freezing, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Young children need the chance to breathe fresh air, run around, and use their “outside” voices. Therefore, please be mindful of the following:

Backpacks should include a cold-weather change of clothes.
Your child should have a warm coat, a hat, and mittens with them every day.
All items should have your child’s name on them. We’re happy to help your little one get dressed, but we need your help to keep straight of all those coats, mittens, and hats!
We suggest that girls wear shoes that are warm enough to play outside. Try to get her into boots or tennis shoes this winter!

2012-2013 Registration Now Open

As of today, January 4, registration for the 2012-2013 school year is now open to all families. If you have children ages 16 months and up, we urge to fill out your paperwork at your earliest convenience, as classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

KIP Food Drive

This Thanksgiving, KIP is joining Jewish Family Career Services for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Teh JFCS Food Pantry swerves about 130 people a month and is funded by a variety of sources. This Thanksgiving, JFCS will be supplying a Thanksgiving meal to over 60 needy families. We hope you’ll help us provide for local families who otherwise won’t have a Thanksgiving meal this year.

The following are items most needed:

boxes of stuffing mix
canned yams
corn muffin mix
gravy packets
canned evaporated milk
canned creamed corn
bags of marshmallows
canned cranberry sauce
small boxes of brown sugar
canned pumpkin
cans of fried onions
canned whole corn
boxes of mashed potatoes

Toiletries are always needed and appreciated, too. Please bring your bag to the KIP lobby by Friday, November 11.

Halloween Party and Parade: Friday the 28th

This Friday is KIP’s annual Halloween parade and party. Please dress your child up in his or her costume and arrive at school no later than 8:45 a.m. The children’s parade will take place on the front lawn at 9:00 a.m. sharp and will end by 9:30. Be sure to bring your camera; the kids are always adorable and the parade is a great photo op. After the parade and parties, the kids will change into street clothes, so do remember to send a change in their backpacks.

Auction Basket Update

Every spring, we auction off themed baskets assembled by the classes and tell would-be bidders that the items inside make great holiday gifts. They do, so this year we’ve decided to do our annual class basket auction before the holidays. We’ll start collecting items on Tuesday, November 1st and will hold our auction before school lets out for the holidays. So while you are out shopping for friends and family this upcoming season, keep KIP and your class basket in mind.

New KIP board member Stephanie Koetter has worked hard to come up with some new themes for this year. Each class has an easy-to-shop-for theme that should make for great items to give away as gifts or keep and enjoy yourself.

KIP Fall Holiday Closings

Starting next week, KIP will be closed or will close early for the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. On these days, the congregation of Keneseth Israel will need to use the building and some actions, such turning lights off and on or writing, are prohibited. We understand that these days present an organizational challenge to non-Jewish KIP families, and we appreciate your graciousness and flexibility in finding alternative child-care arrangements. We’d also like to note that this spring’s Jewish holidays all fall on weekends or during spring break.

Holiday closings for fall 2011 are:

Wednesday, September 28: School will close at 3:00 p.m. for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Happy 5772!

Thursday & Friday, September 29 &30: School is closed for Rosh Hashanah.

Friday, October 7: School will close at 3:00 p.m. for Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.

Thursday, October 13 & Friday, October 14: School will be closed for Sukkot, a fall pilgrimage holiday.

Thursday, October 20: School will be closed for Shemini Atzeret.

Friday, October 21: School will be closed for Simchat Torah, a day that celebrates the Five Books of Moses in the Hebrew Bible.
